Hawkwind –
Anthology (1990)
While the selection at my local
record store can be hot and cold, it was a good day indeed when I chanced upon
this box in the used rack one inspired afternoon. Considerably more robust than your typical greatest
hits or other compilation album – of which there seem to be an infinite number
for Hawkwind – this three disc anthology from 1990 contains subtler gems from
the band’s early studio years, and several live-performance cuts. There are also the requisite standards one
would expect to find on any Hawkwind collection: Brainstorm, Urban Guerilla,
Hurry On Sundown, and the like. It is fitting then that the liner notes are
also refreshingly insightful and lend an interesting perspective from the
band’s fan club, especially when it comes to describing the group’s live
shows. The accompanying photographs suit
the text particularly well.
