Jordan Oliver and “New Age” as they called themselves were a six-piece
out of the Atlanta area
who recorded this, their sole album, in 1980.
Be warned not all the album’s 7 tracks truly classify as Prog – there is clearly enough pop
leanings to be found on some to cast doubt on the validity of calling this Prog at all. This
said, where complexities and original ideas do exist, they are simply
marvelous. Stylistically oriented along
the positivist melodies of Yes or Genesis, New Age manage enough good moments
to leave us obsessed with wondering why they wasted time on the boring
ones. The ten minute long Alpha Centaurus is an absolute treasure for the ears. I’m not one who normally likes fiddle in his prog, but the way Oliver & Co use it to a deep, pushing
effect on this track is stunning and beautiful – as good as anything from PFM,
if not better.
